Recess Specific Terms and Roles:

Staff

Staff are the core Recess team. They're the people building the platform every day, working alongside guides, kids, and parents to make everything else possible. If a guide's focus is the room, staff's focus is Recess itself.

Guide

Guides are the adults who run Recess. They lead classes, cohorts, and community events.

A guide isn't a lecturer standing at the front of the room. Their job is to set up a great challenge, then step back and let kids work - watching closely, asking questions instead of handing over answers, and stepping in when someone needs them. Guides talk to Recessians like the smart, capable people they are.

Spark

Sparks are kid moderators in our community channels.

When a kid has been part of a channel for a while and shown they can be trusted with it, they can be invited to become a Spark. Sparks help keep their channel healthy - welcoming people in, keeping conversation going, making sure everyone gets heard, and holding the space to our Code of Conduct. They're the kids other kids look to, and they set the tone for how their channel feels.

You don't apply to be a Spark. Guides watch for kids who show up consistently, treat people well, and help out without being asked. There's no age requirement - what matters is maturity and a track record in the community.

Recess Ambassador

Recess Ambassadors are our formal kid leadership team.

Where a Spark looks after one channel, an Ambassador looks after the whole community. RAs welcome new members, host games and icebreakers during Community Hour, and help newcomers find the clubs, squads, and friends that fit them. They also meet monthly with guides to test new ideas and help shape what Recess becomes.

Ambassadors apply through your Recess Account (look for the Challenge). You'll need to be at least 10 and have attended 20 Community Hours.
