Recess isn't just about classes—it's a community where your child can connect with other curious, creative kids. Community access is included with every membership, and it's one of the things that makes Recess special. Here's everything your child can explore.
Daily Community Hour
Community Hour is a live video hangout that happens every day. It's one of the best ways for kids to connect with the Recess community.
What it is: A casual, drop-in video call where kids hang out together with Recess guides
When it happens: Community Hour runs on a regular schedule—check your dashboard for the current times
What happens there: Kids play games, work on challenges together, chat about their interests, and just have fun. It's relaxed and social, like a virtual clubhouse.
Who's there: Other Recess members from around the world, plus friendly guides who keep things running smoothly
How to join: Look for Community Hour on your child's dashboard when it's live. They can hop in anytime during the session.
Community Hour is a great way for new members to meet people and for returning members to see their friends.
Chat & Community Channels
Recess has interest-based chat channels where kids can connect around shared passions.
Available channels include:
Art and creative projects
Gaming
Coding and tech
Books and writing
General hangouts
How to join: Your child can browse available channels and click to join any that interest them
What kids can do: Chat with other members, share projects they're working on, ask questions, and find friends with similar interests
Safety: All channels are moderated by the Recess team to keep conversations positive, supportive, and age-appropriate. We take community safety seriously.
Challenges Library
Challenges are creative, self-paced projects that let your child explore subjects at their own speed. With over 50 challenges across many subjects, there's something for everyone.
Subjects include:
Art and illustration
Creative writing
Coding and game design
Science experiments
And more
Difficulty levels: Challenges range from beginner-friendly to advanced, so your child can find the right level of challenge
How to participate:
Browse the challenges library
Pick one that looks interesting
Complete the project at your own pace
Submit your work when you're done
Team challenges: Some challenges can be completed with friends—a fun way to collaborate and learn together
Rewards: Kids earn coins when they complete challenges. These coins can be used for fun rewards within the platform.
Community connection: After completing a challenge, your child can see who else finished the same one—a great conversation starter with potential new friends!
Friends & Connections
Recess makes it easy for kids to build friendships:
Friend requests — Kids can send and accept friend requests to connect with people they meet
See friends in channels — When your child joins a community channel, they can see which of their friends are there too
Shared interests — Our system helps kids connect with others who like similar things
Building friendships is a natural part of the Recess experience, and we encourage kids to reach out and connect.
Safety & Moderation
We know that online safety is a top concern for parents. Here's how we keep Recess safe:
Active moderation — All community spaces are monitored by our team
Age-appropriate environment — Everything at Recess is designed for kids ages 8-14
Community guidelines — Clear rules help keep interactions positive and respectful
Support for concerns — If you ever have a concern about something in the community, contact us immediately and we'll address it
Your child's safety is our priority. We want Recess to be a place where kids can be themselves, try new things, and make friends—all in an environment you can trust.
